CEDARA SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF
NEW .NET DICOM TOOLKIT

  • New release of industry leading toolkit, MergeCOM-3™ provides comprehensive DICOM functionality for engineers working in the Microsoft® .NET development environment.
  • MergeCOM-3 Advanced Integrator’s .NET Toolkit enables rapid application development for software companies interested in creating medical imaging applications.

Toronto, Ontario, October 3, 2006 – Cedara Software, a Merge Healthcare company (Nasdaq: MRGE; TSX: MRG) and a leading independent developer of medical software technologies for the global healthcare market, today announced the release of a new version of its industry-leading DICOM toolkit, MergeCOM-3, which has been redesigned for the Microsoft .NET development environment. Cedara’s MergeCOM-3 toolkit is a unique Software Developers Kit (SDK) that supports flexible DICOM connectivity for software applications.

Previous versions of MergeCOM-3 Advanced Integrator’s Toolkit have been developed to support software development in over 30 operating system/platform combinations, including native JAVA. As a comprehensive toolkit, MergeCOM-3 greatly reduces the time required to bring DICOM-conformant products to market in any area of medical technology because it enables developers to focus on their application program logic rather than specific details of the DICOM protocol.

MergeCOM-3’s Application Programmer's Interface (API) provides a simple, high-level abstraction of DICOM messaging details, as well as a comprehensive collection of sample applications to demonstrate programming concepts that can serve as a starting point to accelerate development.

“I think the engineering community will be very pleased with our new version of MergeCOM-3,” said Peter Bascom, VP of Engineering at Cedara. “In software development, engineers are generally divided into two camps – those who are diehard supporters of .NET and those who are not. With this new release, a broader community of developers will be able to use Cedara’s leading edge tools for DICOM connectivity, which will accelerate their software development projects.”

Similar to Cedara’s Native Java Toolkit version of MergeCOM-3, the .NET version is an object-oriented class library modeled after objects contained in the DICOM standard. A modern design maximizes performance on a wide array of platforms supported by .NET. Use of .NET minimizes the development learning curve and simplifies application portability across a wide variety of platforms.

With over 20 years of experience in custom engineering and software development, Cedara has created a variety of development tools for OEM medical technology companies. Cedara’s solutions include a library of products to support rapid application development including solutions for DICOM and HL7 connectivity, 3D imaging, registration and segmentation, as well as comprehensive product development platforms.

“As a leading independent provider of medical imaging technologies, we are strongly committed to developing powerful and flexible solutions to the healthcare community,” continued Bascom. “From an OEM development perspective, this means flexible products that can easily accommodate different languages, platforms and engineering tools; from an end-user perspective, this means flexible products that are vendor-independent and can be integrated with any existing technology.”

As a long-term member of the DICOM Standards Committee (as well as IHE and ACR/NEMA), Cedara reviews MergeCOM-3 releases biannually for DICOM protocol and definition updates, and makes upgrades transparent to software developers. Cedara’s connectivity solutions are used widely throughout the medical industry, providing key interoperability to major global healthcare companies and organizations.
